Raising Kids with Smarts & Style

Child Magazine asked Simla Akyol about the latest trends in children’s birthday parties on their “BEST-EVER BIRTHDAY PARTY PLANNER” issue.

Children's Environmental Painting Competition

The International Children’s Painting Competition on the Environment is organized annually by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Japan-based Foundation for Global Peace and Environment (FGPE), Bayer and Nikon Corporation. It has been held since 1991 and has received over 170,000 entries from children in over 100 countries.

The organizers invite children from all over the world to submit their paintings to the UNEP office in their region. Entries must reach the relevant UNEP regional offices by 31 December 2006 at the latest.

We Love the Earth and Choose to Celebrate with Nature!

Decorate with consumable food, like nuts, fresh fruit, and cookies.

Let your children discover what nature has to offer: take a walk with them around your backyard to find decorative items such as pinecones, leaves, berries, and flowers. Use pine cones, evergreen branch tips, holly berries and other colorful natural pieces to put the finishing touches on your gifts rather than commercial bows and ribbons.

It's Your Gift! You Can Make it "Green" If You Want To...

Give a garden or plant a tree in someone’s name!

Instead of wrapping a kid's gift, hide the present, plant clues to where it is, and make it into a treasure hunt.

When purchasing toys for young children, buy dolls and stuffed animals made of organic cotton, or handcrafted toys made from natural wood.

RE-duce, RE-use, RE-cycle,
RE-pair. X-plore, X-cite, X-tend

Many people say today’s youth are the leaders of tomorrow, but today also belongs to us. We don’t have to wait to care of the earth. If we show a sense of good leadership and stewardship in caring for the environment, then our family and friends will follow us.
